Opera Houses


Salisbury Opera House, later known as the Owosso Opera House, was located on the second floor of a building at the northwest corner of Washington and Exchange Streets which was built in 1860 and reached by a flight of stairs on Exchange St. Will Rogers and John Phillip Sousa performed here as did many others stars of the day. The Salisbury family ran a bootery on the main floor at 200 N. Washington St. In 1956 it was torn down to make room for Murphy's Department Store.


Owosso Theatres

Allen Theatre....

Bijou Theatre....first to show moving pictures...located at 221 N. Washington St. 5 cents was the admission

Capitol Theatre......

In 1926, Joe Lebowsky built a theatre on the old Owosso City Hall property on the southwest corner of Main and Park streets in Owosso. This building burned in Feb. of 2007.

Coliseum Theatre....216-218 W. Main St. Circa 1910

Crystal Theatre....southeast corner of Main and Ball Streets....circa 1907

Center Theatre....Located at 107 W. Main St. between the old Owosso Hotel and Gilberts Hardware Store. Presently a parking lot. In about 1916, Fred Patterson built this playhouse for an estimated $10,000.

Lincoln Theatre.....204 N. Washington St.

Mission Theatre.....204 N. Washington St. Circa 1910.

Minter Theatre.....204 N. Washington St. Opens 1934. In 1956 it was torn down to make room for Murphy's Department Store.

Owosso Cinemas.....314 E. Comstock St. Opened 1985.

This photo is looking south on Washington St. from Mason St. Notice the arched roof line on the building on the left.

Below is the same building looking northeast in the 1920's. Notice the Strand Theatre's new facade with new marquis and flat roof line.
Also the corner building was Joe Lebowsky's Style Shop, clothing. And the large advertisement on the building says...Strand Theatre...Now Showing...Rin Tin Tin.

Strand Theatre...Located on the Murphy Store site at 202-204 N. Washington St.

Temple Theatre....117 W. Main Street...circa 1907. In 1916, it was dismantled by Fred Patterson and the material was being used in the new theatre that he was building just east of the Temple. It was called the Lincoln and in the early 1930's it became the Minter and still later, renamed the Center. The space that it occupied is between the old Owosso Hotel and Gilbert's Hardware in the 100 block of W. Main St.
