Shiatown

Shiawassee in 1875.

This town was located on the corner of Bancroft and Bennington Roads in Shiawassee Twp. The village originated with Charles Bacon, an adventurer from Ohio, who formed a company to buy and resell land here. The village was platted and recorded in 1836. The Post Office opened as Shiawassee on July 12, 1837, with Lemuel Brown as its postmaster. The office was renamed Shiawassee Town on May 26, 1857.
There were grand plans for this town, as old maps show 90 city blocks platted with streets named, two town squares and a park, in hopes that the State Capitol would be located here.

However, today all that is left is the park and a historic marker.
A dam was built on the Shiawassee River in the early 1900's here to generate electricity. It has been abandoned since the 1960's. A few homes remain.
