U.S. Post Office

Owosso, Michigan

The Owosso Post Office, in the early days, was located near the corner of Exchange and Ball Streets. In 1910, the new Federal building (below) was built on the northwest corner of Exchange and Park Streets, now this site is commonly referred to as the Murphy parking lot.

It was made of cut stone and included marble floors and wainscoating inside. This building was torn down in about 1965. According to oldtimers, the demolition crew had quite a job and it took longer than expected. Another gem of the county, lost to 'progress'.

Above is a rare winter photo of the new building. On the left is the rear
of the Owosso (Strand) Theatre and on the right, is the rear of the old Owosso Armory,
now the location of Nelson-House Funeral Home.

This is postcard is dated 1911 and was sent to Mr. E.P. Stephan, from his friend, James DeYoung who wrote, "This building has no imitation stone and cost about $5,000 without the land. It is one of the finest P.O. buildings I have seen for the money".

The building was closed in 1961 and the Owosso Post Office moved to 319 N. Washington St. and the old post office was torn down in about 1965, which continues to irritate those who remember this fine old building.
