North Newburg, Michigan

North Newburg in 1875.

Newburg, as it is known today, is located at 42°54'32"N 84°4'9"W. on Newburg Rd. west of the Shiawassee River in Shiawassee Township.

Hosea Baker came here in 1835 and bought so much land that he is regarded as the founder of the village. He built a sawmill here in 1836. It was named by another settler, Dr. Nicklas P. Harder, who had formerly lived near Newburgh-on-the-Hudson, N.Y.

John Grumley became the first postmaster on Aug. 4, 1863 and it closed on Aug. 26, 1893. The school and grist mill are long gone, but a few homes remain.
