The Looking Glass River

Shiawassee County Michigan

The Looking Glass River begins in the north east corner of Livingston County and flows north into Shiawassee County a few miles east of Morrice Rd. As soon as it crosses the I-69 interstate it turns west and proceeds west south of Laingsburg. The Looking Glass continues in a westerly direction just south of Round Lake Rd. until it exits the county.

It eventually passes through Clinton County before entering the Grand River at Portland in Ionia County. The Looking Glass River has no dams along its 75 mile length and it is bordered by primarily wetlands and woodlots.

This stream starts as a sluggish soft-bottom waterway with northern pike fishing opportunities. The lower stretch from DeWitt downstream is good canoeing water, but it also better fishing, so there is more activity in this area.

From the Livingston County Line to Laingsburg (about 25 miles) the river averages 10 feet wide to 18 feet wide. A great place for Northern Pike and closer to Laingsburg are found Bullheads and sunfish, due to the deeper waters of 2 to 4 feet.

County roads cross the river at about every mile to two, so access to the Looking Glass is excellent. The DNR does not stock the river with hatchery-reared fish.
