Glass River

Shiawassee County

Glass River in 1875.

Glass River was located in Antrim Twp. on Ellsworth Rd. The first land entries were made by Allen Beard and Lyman Elvin, New Yorkers, in 1836. The township was organized in 1838 with Thomas B. Flint as its first supervisor. It was at this time that John Stiles conducted the first school in a cabin, the former home of Horace B. Flint.

Glass River General Store.

This photo was taken in July 2000.
This building is located on Ellsworth, west of the Glass River Cemetery. According to the 1875 Map, this building could be the Odd Fellows Hall on the second floor, as there was an exterior stair case on the east side of the building.
The General Store is located on land owned by Judge Begole.

The Post Office was opened here in the home of the first postmaster, John Sears on May 1, 1851 and was named Antrim after the township. It was renamed Glass River on March 17, 1868, after the Looking Glass River which runs the length of the township. The Post Office closed on Sept. 13, 1888 and all that remains is the old General Store building.

Below is a photo of the Glass River Cememery, which is east of town.

This does not show on the map because it was established in 1880.
