Shiawassee County
Old Filling Stations

MICHIGAN

Here are a couple of pictures of gas stations from days-gone-by. So far, the three stations below are the only ones known to exist in Shiawassee County. If you know of other surviving stations, please e-mail address today.

This station is located at Burton Corners, on the southeast corner of M-21 and Baldwin Roads, about 6 miles east of Owosso.

Carland Gas Station on left.

This station was owned at one time by Richard and Edna Sloat.... they also were a Ford Tractor Dealer. Edna's parents, Bateson and Florence Harris, sold cars and were one of two car dealers in Carland.

The station below is located 1/2 mile west of M-13 on New Lothrop Road. In the early 1900's these old wood frame stations usually had two tall gas pumps. The attendant would ask the driver how much gas he wanted to buy. And then he would pump the fuel up into a glass cylinder, which was above the hand operated pump. The cylinder was marked showing the number of gallons it contained. Once the proper amount was shown, a hose was put into the car's tank and the fuel was released from the glass cylinder, which was approximately 2 feet in diameter and four feet high. This Visible Gas Pump has the Mobilgas logo and is a Wayne #615. Very collectable today.

The following Gas Station is no longer in exsistance.

Standard Oil Station in Bancroft, MI

It was located on the SW corner of Payne and Bancroft Roads and was owned by Kenneth Vance, who is show above with his son David in 1951. Ken had an outdoor ramp for servicing cars and changing tires. Photo supplied by Donna Caldwell of Owosso.

Don Mitchell owned Mitchell's Super Service at the southwest corner of M-21 and M-52 in Owosso.

Don is seen here with son, Bill Mitchell, on his left and other employees in the 1940's.
