Fremont in 1875.
Fremont was located in Shiawassee Twp. on Grand River Rd. just east of I-69. It was platted in 1841 and recorded in 1882 as the village of Florence by Nelson Ferry for John W. Gilbert and Isaac M. Banks.
A Post Office was opened here Nov. 2, 1847 with Alonzo Howard serving as its first postmaster. The village flourished until 1856 when the new railroad by-passed it. The post office closed on Aug. 2, 1881. Fremont Cemetery is all that remains.
Because Fremont is on an Exit of I-69, perhaps someday it come back to life.
