****First Frame House to be built in Shiawassee County in 1836 was constructed by Mortimer Bradley Martin. The address of the house is 5952 Grand River Road, south of Bancroft in Antrim Twp. and is known as "The Willows". Mr. Martin set out a row of willow trees, cuttings from a farm once owned by the Secretary of State, William Seward of Auburn, N.Y. He also bought from a pawnshop in New York City an "F. Breton" violin that had been owned by Marie Therese Charlotte, the daughter of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette of France. Marie was born in 1778 in Versailles. The whereabouts of the violin is one of Shiawassee County's mysteries.
