Burns, Michigan

Burns in 1875.

It was located in the northwest corner of Burns Twp. in section 6 at what is now known as Knaggs Bridge area.

Whitmore Knaggs opened a trading post here in 1820, but the actual settlement did not begin until Dyer Rathburn and his family came in 1835. A Post Office opened here on May 31, 1848, with Ebenezer F. Wade as its first postmaster. The office closed on Nov. 21, 1881. The village was platted in 1872. A few homes remain, as does the Burns Grange Hall #160, below.

Located near the site of the Post Office, just east of the bridge.

Just 1/4 mile northeast of the Grange Hall is the Gaylord Cemetery and a marker which reads, "In Memory of 30 or more of the Ohio Colony, who came here in 1851-52".
